Bob Worrest
has been with CIESIN longer than anyone else, having joined CIESIN in 1992. Initially, he worked in the Washington DC office and later went on detail to various US government offices, including the US Global Change Research Program Office and more recently the U.S. Geological Survey, where he serves as chief scientist for the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII
). Bob has managed to balance his research activities in support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP
) Assessment Panel on Environmental Effects of Ozone Depletion with his interests in environmental and science policy. A clear sign of his impact was that, in 1997, at the tenth anniversary celebration of the Montreal Protocol, he received the UNEP Global Ozone Award
for outstanding service for the protection of the ozone layer.
Before joining CIESIN, Bob worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on a range of environmental issues including ozone depletion, coastal and estuarine research, arctic environmental protection, and climate change. He was a professor of radiation biology at Oregon State University, where he received his Ph.D.
