India - After 30 years, farmers in the Rae Bareli area of Uttar Pradesh, India are finally getting irrigation water from the Sharda Sahayak Canal. Sonia Gandhi, head of the United Progressive Alliance party, told a public rally that she had kept her election promise to start the water flowing again. The canal was built when Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister, but went dry due to silting. This forced 90% of the farmers in Sareni and Sataon to migrate to the state of Punjab as crop yields fell sharply. The Uttar Pradesh government asked for 1.05 billion rupees to dredge the canal and get it going again; of this, Rs. 520 million have been spent and work is continuing.
