Scientists, expert naturalists, and volunteers participated in the Student and Family 2017 BioBlitz in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, September 29. The BioBlitz was an intensive educational event and scientific endeavor engaging teams of “citizen scientists” in identifying as many different species as possible in a 12-hour period. Volunteers worked alongside scientists and expert naturalists in three 4-hour shifts, beginning at 10:00 am and ending at 10:00 pm. More than fifty K-12 students participated. Volunteers also assisted in "Base Camp" operations, supporting registration, food preparation, digital mapping, photography, and social media activities. Data from current and past BioBlitzes provide critical snapshots of changes in biodiversity—that may be due to climate change, sea-level rise, and other stressors—within the unique Sandy Hook ecosystem. Sandy Hook is a landform extension of a barrier peninsula on the New Jersey coast that is managed by the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) as the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The 2017 BioBlitz was organized by the American Littoral Society with assistance from CIESIN on registration, logistics, and outreach.

Mark Becker’s Life and Work Celebrated and Student Scholarship Fund Announced

More than 300 friends, colleagues, students, and family members gathered at the Dolce Palisades Conference Center in Palisades, New York, March 23 for a memorial service and celebration of the life of Mark Becker, CIESIN associate director for Geospatial Applications who died in a multi-vehicle accident February 26 at the age of 53. The event highlighted Becker′s efforts over three decades to protect the watershed in northern New Jersey through the Bergen Save the Watershed Action Network (Bergen SWAN), which he co-founded with his partner of 30 years, Lori Charkey. CIESIN director Robert Chen chronicled Becker′s many professional accomplishments in 15 years at CIESIN, including collaborations across Columbia University and major contributions to a diverse set of research activities. Other speakers included CIESIN colleagues Kytt MacManus and Jim Carcone, who spoke of their colleague′s unique ability as a mentor for both students and staff and his significant impact on many lives and on the environment. The service incorporated stories and readings by friends and family, a video of Becker playing guitar with his grand-nephew, and remembrances of his love of music, water, plants, chimes, and stones. The public memorial was followed by a private reception at Columbia’s Lamont campus. A student scholarship fund in honor of Mark Becker has been established at the Earth Institute. The fund will be used to support student training and education in geospatial methods and technologies. Becker′s family has also suggested donations in his memory to Bergen SWAN or to other charitable organizations.

CIESIN Aids First-Ever Biological Snapshot of Sandy Hook, New Jersey

CIESIN provided information dissemination, online registration, and data collection support for the first ever “BioBlitz” of Sandy Hook, a 1,665-acre barrier peninsula on the north end of New Jersey's Atlantic shoreline. For 24 hours, teams of scientists, amateur naturalists, and volunteers observed and counted as many plants and animals as possible at the Gateway National Recreation Area’s Sandy Hook Unit. The event began at 3 pm September 16 and ended at 3 pm September 17. Sponsored by the National Park Service, American Littoral Society, Rutgers University, and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, the Sandy Hook Bioblitz was modeled on previous Bioblitz events held in Jamaica Bay in 2010, 2009, and 2007 and supported by the Jamaica Bay Research and Management Information Network (JBRMIN), a Web site hosted by CIESIN’s NBII-NIN program. .

Plumb Beach Project Open to Public Comment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is proposing to construct a series of beach protection and erosion control structures along a 3,000-foot-long stretch of Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, and in offshore waters. The location of the "Plumb Beach Nourishment Project" is bounded by Belt Parkway to the north, Sheepshead bay channel to the west, Gerritsen Inlet to the east, and Rockaway Inlet to the south. The purpose of the project is to protect the beach and Belt Parkway and associated utilities and infrastructure along a severely eroded section of Plumb Beach from further damage from coastal storm surges and flooding. Project elements include approximately 2,000 feet of beach berms (maximum elevation approximately 9 feet), approximately 1,000 feet of dune restoration (maximum elevation approximately 12 feet), an approximately 200-foot-long eastern and 150-foot-long western terminal groin, and an approximately 200-foot-long underwater stone offshore breakwater reef to reduce storm wave impact and beach sand losses. Filed application documents, and Department draft permits where applicable, are available for inspection during normal business hours at the address of the contact person. To ensure timely service at the time of inspection, it is recommended that an appointment be made with the contact person. This Project is an Unlisted Action and will not have a significant impact on the environment. A Negative Declaration is on file. A coordinated review was performed. SEQR Lead Agency: NYS Department of Environmental Conservation A Structural-Archaeological Assessment Form has been completed. The proposed activity will not impact on registered, eligible or inventoried archaeological sites or historic structures. This project is located in a Coastal Management area and is subject to the Waterfront Revitalization and Coastal Resources Act. Ecology Village Summer Camping Program: Leadership Training

The National Park Service at Gateway National Recreation Area announces its 2010 summer camping program for school and youth groups at Floyd Bennett Field. Reservations for the camping program are now being accepted, but space is limited. New leaders must attend the upcoming 30 hour free training course which includes an overnight stay at the campground. The training is to be held on July 9th from 10-4 and July 11-12 from noon to noon. Interested youth group leaders are encouraged to call the Jamaica Bay Unit Education Division for more information and to sign up for the training at (718) 338-4306. View the flyer.

The Times Union reports the New York Racing Association (NYRA) is facing heavy fines for pollution violations, the worst of which is the dumping of horse manure from Belmont Park racetrack into Jamaica Bay. The violation notice says pumping records for Belmont track showed that from January to July 2009, the track discharged manure, wastewater and other pollutants into the bay via the Nassau County storm drain system. New Waterfront Park Slated for Jamaica Bay

An acre-plus property on Jamaica Bay--once slated for development of 20 houses--will become a new waterfront park. More than 2,400 people live within a quarter mile of the new park, which will offer fishing and picnicking while serving as a launch area for canoes and kayaks. The New York Daily News reports on a study aimed at growing oysters in an effort to clean up Jamaica Bay. Led by SUNY Stonybrook and funded by the National Park Service and the Hudson River Foundation, researchers have verified oyster population growth in certain test areas.
