Part One

Part One includes the seven "primary" metadata entry sections: Identification Information, Data Quality, Spatial Data Organization, Spatial Reference, Entity and Attribute Information, Distribution, and Metadata Reference. Each section provides definitions and guidelines for entering appropriate metadata.

All metadata records, regardless of format, media, or content type require metadata for the following sections: Identification Information (which provides the title and bibliographic reference for the information resource you are describing, as well as other important descriptive information), Distribution (which provides information on how to access and/or acquire the data resource you are describing), and Metadata Reference (which gives information about the origin and maintenance of the description being provided). Mandatory ("required") metadata elements are indicated by an asterisk "
*".

If you are describing a geospatial information resource (whether a print map, a globe, a database, or a satellite image) you will need to include metadata for the previously noted required sections as well as for Spatial Data Organization, Spatial Reference, and Entity and Attribute Information, as appropriate. This is particularly important if you are required to comply with the FGDC Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).
