CIESIN director Alex de Sherbinin helped organize and then participated in an interactive workshop focused on the development of climate adaptation interventions in some of Rio de Janeiro's most vulnerable communities. The workshop was supported by a grant from Columbia's Rio Global Center Climate Hub.The workshop took place 25-26 November 2024 at the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Dr. César Marques da Silva at IBGE's School for Statistical Sciences (ENCE) served as local organizer, together with graduate student Ana Bliggs. The workshop, entitled “Understanding the Impacts of Climate Change on Vulnerable Populations and Promoting Climate Resilience in Rio de Janeiro”, attracted 60 local change makers in a highly interactive set of sessions expertly designed and led by Johanna Lovecchio of the Columbia Climate School and CIESIN intern Luan Fontes, a graduate student in planning at Columbia's GSAPP. A workshop report and action plan is in preparation.
