GIS Specialist— Senior Research Staff Associate

Job Description

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, NY, has an opening for a GIS Specialist to support interdisciplinary studies of human-environment interactions using GIS and remote sensing RS technologies. Activities for the position are focused on developing, analyzing, and mapping information to investigate regional and global development indicators on biodiversity protection and global health, and to support research on natural hazards. The GIS Specialist consults with senior scientific staff on the use of advanced spatial analysis techniques and technologies to advance their applied research; automates mapping tasks through scripting and application development; and contributes to the development of interactive web mapping services and portals.

Typical duties include the creation and management of spatial data sets, including database design, data ingest, and processing; maintaining quality assurance/quality control systems; and properly documenting workflows and procedures. Analysis and mapping responsibilities include carrying out advanced vector- and raster-based spatial and statistical analysis and the creation of maps and other visualizations.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: B.S. or B.A. or professional degree in social or physical science field and two years experience; or an M.S. or M.A in a related field. Advanced degree preferred. Two (2) years experience using GIS (ArcGIS 9.x and ArcInfo preferred); some experience with image processing systems (ERDAS, ENVI, or other) is also required. Must have demonstrated experience with raster-based modeling. Must have demonstrated ability to produce publication-quality maps using ESRI products and professional graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator.

Additional skills a plus:

  • Knowledge of other GIS software and geospatial tools such as IDRISI, GRASS, or Intergraph
  • Experience in implementing FGDC and ISO metadata standards
  • Working knowledge of Open Geospatial Consortium standards and initiatives
  • Competence in statistical analysis packages such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA
  • Competence in SQL scripting
  • Familiarity with global development issues

GIS Developer/Analyst—Research Staff Associate

Job Description

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, New York, has an opening for a GIS Developer/Analyst to support interdisciplinary studies of human-environment interactions using geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies. The position is focused on developing, analyzing, and mapping information in order to investigate regional and global development indicators, protect biodiversity and to promote research on natural hazards.

Duties include creation and management of online interactive mapping systems; creation, maintenance and integration of large spatial and non-spatial data sets; writing scripts and programs to automate routine tasks; developing quality control methods, and documenting workflows and procedures. The position also requires an ability to conduct basic spatial and statistical analysis on collections of development indicators aggregated at the sub-national level and to create innovative methods for the visualization of these data.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. or B.A. or professional degree and at least four years experience; or M.S. or M.A. plus two years work experience. Degrees should be in Geography or Computer Science, or other related field emphasizing knowledge of spatial analysis techniques germane to CIESIN’s ongoing and planned activities. Advanced degree preferred. Required skills include:

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain mapping services meeting OGC standards
  • Two+ years experience with ESRI ArcServer, ArcIMS, ArcObjects programming, & ArcInfo GRID.
  • Two+ years with Web technologiesASP/ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript, DHTML; Databases: Access, SQL Server and/or Oracle
  • Competence in statistical analysis packages such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA
  • Experience in implementing FGDC and ISO metadata standards
  • Familiarity with global development issues

Research Assistants

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, New York, is seeking student assistants to work on various projects at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences. Semester-long positions are available with flexible hours and some possibility for extension. At present we are interested in research assistants to help with integrating social science and natural science data, including data processing and documentation for NASA data center work aimed at improving linkages between socioeconomic and earth science data. Successful applicants will be matched to specific tasks based on skills and interests. Knowledge of some of the following software will be needed: Excel, Access, SPSS or STATA, MATLAB, and ArcGIS.

Currently-enrolled Columbia University students are preferred with Federal Work Study eligibility included as part of a current financial aid package.

CIESIN is located on the Lamont campus of Columbia University in Palisades, New York. A 40-minute ride from Columbia's Morningside Heights campus, the free shuttle bus makes five round trips each weekday.
